Circa 1990 Ty Cobb Original Artwork Used in the Seagram's 7 Crown Sports Promotion
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Original acrylic-on-board painting of Ty Cobb by noted sports artist Cliff Spohn. Signed by the artist in the lower right. Many sports fans will probably instantly recognize this painting because it was commissioned by Seagram's Seven for its well-known Seagram's Seven Crowns of Sports promotion in the early 1990s. Ideally, it has been consigned directly by the original art director for that promotion, in whose sole possession it has remained since that time. Today, this particular image can most commonly be found on Seagram's Seven promotional mirrors that were issued to bars and taverns at the time (the mirrors themselves are now collectibles). This is one of a series of sports paintings produced by Spohn for Seagram's at the time, each of which is similar in design. A large portrait of Cobb is pictured in the center, surrounded by a montage of the Hall of Fame outfielder in various action poses (hitting, sliding, fielding, etc.). Original illustration paintings from prestigious national advertising campaigns are rare. The fact this particular piece features the legendary "Georgia Peach" and was created by a well-known sports artist, not to mention its spectacular aesthetic appeal, makes it especially desirable. The painting, which measures an impressive 31.5 x 25.25 inches (image area), remains in Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 38.5 x 33 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
