1952 Brooklyn Dodgers Scorebook - Kept by Mrs. Walter O'Malley!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,185
This small baseball scorebook, which records sixty-five Brooklyn Dodgers games from 1952, enjoys the extraordinarily special provenance of having been personally kept by Mrs. Walter O'Malley. The book's ownership is made abundantly clear by the vintage notation printed on the first page reading "Reward/If Returned To/Mrs. Walter O'Malley/215 Montague/Bklyn." Also affixed to the front page is the bottom portion of a 1952 Coca-Cola Playing Tips card displaying the Dodgers home schedule for the season. The scorebook includes a number of spring-training games at the beginning and then moves on the regular season, with the first entry dated March 13th and the final one dated September 26th. For most games, Mrs. O'Malley makes note of the attendance and the time of the game, as well as a number of additional observations in the top and bottom borders. Many of her notes are humorous as well as informative, as in one spring-training game where she writes "Church. Arr. Late." For another game, on September 2nd, she writes on the top of the page "Happy Anniversary" in blue ink, but, after the Dodgers lost the game, she adds "Very Un" in black ink, in front of her original notation. Most amusing is her recording of Carl Erskine's no-hitter on June 19th. In the corner of the page she notes "At Home June 19, 1952 - TV - Radio- In Car! - Electricity Off Sat in Car to Finish it." Starting on June 21st she also begins to make note of how many games the Dodgers lead the Giants by in the standings. Also included in the book are Walter O'Malley's baggage claim ticket from the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, and a few ticket stubs and passes from the season. The cloth-covered scorebook (7.5 x 4.5 inches), manufactured by MacGregor Goldsmith Inc., is officially titled Official Reporter's Score Book, and, as noted on the title page, was "Printed For Baseball Writer's Association of America." The book displays modest wear, commensurate with its age and former use, and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,185
