Original Polo Grounds Seat (Refurbished)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,259

Original, refurbished stadium seat from the Polo Grounds, longtime home to the New York Giants and, briefly, the New York Mets. This example is all the more desirable for the fact that it features a rare figural end piece. The intricate interlocking "NY" displayed within the design of the framework unequivocally defines it as a Polo Grounds seat and further indicates that it was once located at the end of a row. The Polo Grounds will always be revered as one of baseball's grandest old ballparks and sacred home of the Giants from 1891 to 1957. The New York Mets brought baseball back to the Polo Grounds in 1962 and 1963, but it was ultimately torn down in 1964 to make room for housing projects, leaving only memories and a few seats as reminders of the history that once unfolded there. The seat retains its original wood slates and metal framework; however, all of the nuts and bolts are modern replacements. It has been completely repainted in bright orange and gray, with the figural "NY" end piece painted in black. The number "1" is stenciled in black on the backrest. The unit has been mounted on two separate metal "legs" that allow it to stand freely. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,259
