Circa 1957 Mickey Mantle Endorsed Milk Carton

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,015

Exceedingly rare 1950s milk carton featuring Mickey Mantle. This one-quart milk carton, produced by the Meadow Sweet All-Star Dairies of Eire, Kansas, pictures Mantle in uniform on a side panel, above which appears the simple printed endorsement "Mickey Mantle’s Favorite Milk." (It should be noted that on this example only vestiges of the name "Mickey Mantle's" above "Favorite Milk" remain; however, it appears to be a factory printing flaw as opposed to being the result of any wear or damage to the carton.) A copyright notice on the container is dated 1957. This is without a doubt one of the rarest Mickey Mantle collectibles in the entire collecting world. To date, we have only seen three other examples, two of which in years past were offered by REA. The first, which originated from the famed Barry Halper Collection, appeared as Lot 1059 in our April 2007 auction, where it realized a final sale price of $3,818. The second, which was a chocolate-milk carton, appeared as Lot 1273 in our May 2008 auction, where it sold for $2,350. The offered carton is a new discovery that originates, not surprisingly, directly from Kansas, where it has been miraculously saved since 1957 and has been consigned by a noncollector. Its rarity is certainly understandable given the nature of the product. It is hard to imagine anyone saving a milk carton at all, even one with Mickey Mantle's image. That this carton remains in its complete, original state is even more amazing. The carton (2.75 x 2.75 x 9.25 inches) shows general wear, including a staple to the top flap (small tear as well) and five small nail holes to the underside. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding example of this newly discovered rarity that would be a significant addition to any advanced Mickey Mantle collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,015
