Enormous 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers Flag that Once Hung in Ebbets Field!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,541

Large double-sided blue flag, featuring the team name,"Dodgers," in white lettering on each side, that hung at Ebbets Field in the 1950s. Constructed of heavy-duty cloth, the flag displays a metal grommet at each end of the straight border so that it could hang properly from a pole. A "Baldwin Regalia Co." (St. Louis, Missouri) manufacturer's tag is located near one of the grommets. This flag initially appeared as Lot 17 in Leland's November 20-21, 1993, auction (we know, that's a long time ago!), where it realized a final sales price of $5,500. Our consignor was the purchaser at that time and it has remained in his sole possession until now. Although no documentation accompanies the flag, at the time of its original sale the auction house stated that it had impeccable provenance, having been obtained by a construction worker during the dismantling of Ebbets Field after the Dodgers moved west. Additionally, we have been told by a major collector of Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia, that this particular style flag used to hang outside the entrance ways to Ebbets Field. The flag (117 x 32 inches) displays heavy wear commensurate with its outdoor use, including a number of stains. In Very Good condition. Original mementoes from Ebbets Field are extremely rare, and this is the only example of this particular style Brooklyn Dodgers flag we can ever recall seeing at auction. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,541
