1956 Brooklyn Dodgers Tour of Japan Presentation Photo Album and Ticket Stub
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185
In 1956 Walter O'Malley, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was invited by Matsutaro Shoriki, known as the “Father of Japanese Professional Baseball,” to bring his club to Japan for a series of exhibition games. In the spirit of goodwill, O'Malley accepted and immediately following the World Series the Dodgers embarked on their tour, which saw them play nineteen games in the span of a little more than three weeks. Following their return, each member on the trip received a handsomely bound photo album featuring thirty-one black-and-white photos chronicling their tour of Japan. Offered here is one of the photo albums from that celebrated tour, as well as a ticket stub from one of the games. The hard-bound album features gilt-stamped lettering on the cover that reads "Brooklyn Dodgers/Goodwill Tour of Japan/1956/Yomuri Shimbun/Tokyo Japan." Among the many scenes recorded by the photos are the team's arrival at the airport, the motorcade reception, the meeting of dignitaries, game action shots, a trip to the Hiroshima shrine, and a trip to a geisha house. Included among the players pictured are Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, and Pee Wee Reese. Each of the photos is mounted on an album page and remains in Near Mint condition. A number of the pages display brief handwritten identifiers along the base (obviously written by the former owner). The original thin strings tying the two covers to the album have unraveled (most are missing), leaving the covers detached from the main body of the album. The pages are all internally bound by staples and glue, and are not affected by the loss of the string. The title page of the album has torn from the spine; otherwise in Excellent condition overall. 14 x 10 inches. Included with album is a ticket stub from the tour dated "11 10." Although all of the text is in Japanese, research indicates that the Dodgers defeated the "All-Japan" team by a score of 8-2 at Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo on that date. The ticket stub (5.25 x 3 inches) features a colorful baseball illustration on the front remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 2 items (album and ticket stub). Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
