Vintage Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees Photo Collection with Many Used in the 1949-1951 Bowman Card Issues, Including Robinson, Campanella
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Collection of thirteen original 1940s and 1950s New York Yankees or Brooklyn Dodgers official publicity photos, nine of which were used by Bowman on its gum cards between the years 1949 and 1951. Interestingly, this small but fascinating original photo collection accompanied the B. C. Clark autographed ball collection and were all obtained and personally saved by B. C. Clark. (For more information on the B. C. Clark Collection please see our introduction in this catalog to his remarkable autographed-ball collection.) All of the black-and-white photos, which measure 8 x 10 inches, display either a New York Yankees or Brooklyn Dodgers proprietary stamp, respectively, on the reverse. The nine photos used in the annual Bowman issues (some for more than one year) are those of Jackie Robinson (1950; taken by noted Brooklyn team photographer Barney Stein), Roy Campanella (1950), Duke Snider (1949; rookie card), Gil Hodges (1950), Don Newcombe (1951), Hank Bauer (1950 and 1951), Cliff Mapes (1950 and 1951), Allie Reynolds (1949 and 1950), and Tom Ferrick (1951). The remaining four photos are those of Carl Furillo, Ed Lopat, Johnny Mize, and Joe Ostrowski. The Reynolds photo displays a heavy horizontal crease and a large tear (no paper loss). Otherwise, all of the photos have light-to-moderate creasing throughout, with four others also displaying minor edge tears (Bauer, Mapes, Ostrowski, and Lopat). In Good to Very Good condition overall. Total: 13 photos Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $593
