1933 R319 Goudey Uncut Sheet with Five Hall of Famers Including #181 Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $35,550
Complete and extremely rare 24-card production sheet of 1933 R319 Goudey "Big League" Chewing Gum cards (featuring the twenty-four cards numbered from #166 to #189), highlighted by one of the four key Babe Ruth cards in the set (#181). The #181 Babe Ruth card is in MINT condition. Any uncut 1933 Goudey sheet would be a highlight in even the most advanced collection, but a sheet with Babe Ruth (and there are very few) has an even greater universal appeal, and can be easily appreciated as a museum-caliber card-related display piece by any card collector. Fewer than one hundred Goudey sheets from all baseball series are known to exist and only a small number of these include Babe Ruth. This sheet also includes four additional Hall of Famers: #168 Goose Goslin, 187 Heinie Manush, 188 Rogers Hornsby, and 189 Joe Cronin. The 1933 Goudey set is the first of all modern gum-card issues and the most important of all Goudey issues. Uncut sheets of Goudey cards are extremely rare and among the most popular and sought-after of all baseball-card sheets. Few types of uncut sheets are held in higher esteem, are more meaningful to more collectors, or more ideal for display. Goudey sheets have always been considered the blue-chip staple of vintage uncut sheets, the standard against which the desirability and rarity of all other vintage uncut sheets are compared. The offered sheet originates long ago directly from the files of Goudey. The sheet is spectacularly bright and clean, with bold and vibrant colors, and a stunning overall Excellent appearance. There is a 1/8-inch wide tape stain on the left edge (related to storage in a large sample book as an official file copy sheet by Goudey) and no left border. The offered sheet shows trace evidence of tape removal horizontally in the right half of the top and bottom rows, extending approximately six inches from the right border inward. Many of the Goudey file sheets have undergone restoration over the years, and the removal of tape, as in this instance, would be considered very minor. The sheet is free of creasing or wrinkling and displays only light, even wear at the corners. Due to its size these minor flaws have no impact on the sheet's extremely impressive and extraordinary display value. The reverse of the sheet is perfectly clean and boldly printed. As noted, the #181 Babe Ruth card is located in the middle of the sheet and is in absolutely flawless MINT condition (both front and back). While it may have a somewhat modest impact on the value of the sheet (compared to how the market values Goudey Ruths in MINT condition), it is hard not to appreciate that a PSA 10 Ruth is a six-figure card, and the interior card of Ruth on this sheet is essentially an absolutely perfect, flawless example, and possibly the very best in the world (though perhaps, ironically, not currently valued in the same manner as a Mint card simply because it is in the center of an uncut sheet). This is an incredible representation of one of the greatest treasures in the card-collecting world, an uncut sheet of 1933 Goudey gum cards featuring five Hall of Famers, including the incomparable Babe Ruth. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $35,550
