1947 Jackie Robinson Original News Photo (4/10/47)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $711
Extraordinary original International News Photo capturing Jackie Robinson as he signs autographs for children at the ballpark on April 10th, just five days prior to his major league debut with the Dodgers. Although it took some time for Robinson to win over his teammates, the fans, especially the young ones shown here, seem to be completely behind Robinson as evidenced by the excitement on their faces as they jostle with each other to acquire his signature. As noted by the original paper news caption on the reverse (dated 4/10/47 and attached by means of clear tape), Robinson was still a member of the Montreal Royals at the time of this photo. In full: "Negro ballplayer popular with Brooklyn fans. Brooklyn, N.Y.....Jackie Robinson, gets a big hand from young Dodger rooters, who arrived early for the exhibition game between the Dodgers and Montreal. The Negro, third baseman for the Canadian team, which is a Dodger farm, led the International League in hitting last year and there are strong indications that he may be in the Dodger lineup at opening day, April 15th, when the Brooklyn club plays against the Bostons." An International News Photo stamp appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp "SEP 1947." The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) displays only modest handling wear, including a few very light creases, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $711
