1937 San Diego Team Photo (PCL) with Ted Williams
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,067
Photo capturing twenty-five members of the 1937 San Diego Padres (Pacific Coast League) in a traditional team pose, including Ted Williams. Encapsulated and certified as "Authentic" by SGC. The fabled "Splendid Splinter," who was in just his second professional season, is pictured in the top row, second from the right. All of the players are identified in print along the base of the photo. The printed caption along the top reads "1937 Pacific Coast League." Williams batted .291 with 23 home runs for San Diego in 1937. It would be twenty-two years before he would finish another season with an average under .300. This small photo (6.75 x 4.75 inches) was most likely a team-issued souvenir, as we have also seen a real-photo postcard from 1937 featuring the identical image. This is an extraordinary and extremely rare photo, and is the first example we have offered. The photo has a tiny crease in the upper right corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,067
