Circa 1933 Babe Ruth and New York Yankees Spring-Training Photo Collection (18)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,659

Addendum: Please note that we have been told by the consignor that this collection of photos originates from the estate of E. G. Barnhill, who was a noted Florida photographer. For many years Mr. Barnhill was also the photographer for the NY Yankees during spring training.

This vintage photographic collection, which depicts members of the New York Yankees during spring training in the early 1930s, is comprised of snapshot photos, real-photo postcards, and two glass negatives. Ideally, twelve of the sixteen photos capture Babe Ruth, both on and off the field, including one picturing him signing his 1930 contract. 1-13) Thirteen original snapshot photos. Nine of the photos capture Ruth, five of which picture him on the field, either practicing or posing for the camera, including one in which he is cavorting with famous comedian Joe E. Brown (who is dressed in a Yankees uniform and sweater). Three other photos picture Ruth posing on the golf course, while the ninth photo pictures him in street clothes posing with three other individuals. Two of the Ruth photos have handwritten ink notations along the base identifying him, while another has identifying notations in the main body of the image. The remaining four snapshot photos picture, respectively, Lou Gehrig (posing on field), Joe McCarthy (posing on field), Red Rolfe and another player (posing on field), and the entire New York Yankees team (classic team pose, including Ruth, Gehrig, and team owner Jacob Ruppert). Four of the photos measure approximately 3 x 4 inches, while the remainder measure approximately 4 x 6 inches. Eight photos feature scalloped edges. All of the photos display moderate handling wear, including a few light creases, and range in grade from Good to Excellent, averaging Vg-Ex. 14-15) Two Babe Ruth real-photo postcards (3.5 x 5.5 inches). The first pictures him nattily attired as he poses on the sidewalk. Published by "E. G. Barnhill Studios, 12 3rd Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida," as noted on the reverse. Not addressed or mailed. Ex, with light spotting on the reverse. The other captures Ruth in golf attire as he signs an autograph. No publisher listed. Not addressed or mailed. Vg, with a few moderate creases. 16-18) Two original glass negatives and original photo. Each of the glass negatives (5 x 4 inches) pictures Ruth seated at a table with Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert, his wife Claire, and an unidentified gentleman as he signs his contract for the 1930 season. One negative captures all four individuals, while the other is a close-up focusing on Ruth, Claire, and Ruppert. Each is in Excellent to Mint condition. Included with the negatives is an original photo (6.75 x 4.75 inches) made from the first negative picturing all four individuals. Vg, with minor creasing and an edge tear in the lower right corner. Total: 18 items (13 snapshot photos, 2 real-photo postcards, 2 negatives, and 1 photo made from one of the negatives). Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
