1939 Lou Gehrig "Streak Ends" Original Photo PSA/DNA Type 1
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Original news photo picturing New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig and manager Joe McCarthy sitting side by side in the dugout at Briggs Stadium in Detroit following the end of Gehrig's record 2,130 consecutive-game playing streak on May 2, 1939. Encapsulated and certified by PSA/DNA as a "Type I" original Acme Newspictures photo. An Acme Newspictures credit stamp appears on the reverse, as does the original paper news caption, dated "5-2-39." This is an especially evocative photo, as both Gehrig and McCarthy appear expressionless as they gaze out at the field, almost as if in disbelief at the tragic turn of events that led to the end of Gehrig's streak. The photo (9 x 7 inches) displays a few tiny edge creases and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
