Circa 1920s Ty Cobb-Endorsed Straw Hat

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $830

Ty Cobb endorsed countless retail products during his lifetime, but none today are probably more elusive then this great rarity: a circa 1920s straw hat manufactured by Tracey The Hatter. This is the first example of this Ty Cobb endorsed hat we have offered, and we have never even seen or heard of another. The hat, size "7 1/8," features a black band along the exterior and a leather head band. Both Cobb's name and the name of the manufacturer are printed on the interior "Tracey The Hatter - Norristown, PA. - Erie, PA. - Jamestown, N.Y. - Ty Cobb." That Cobb would be asked to endorse a straw hat is not surprising. Unlike most ballplayers of his era, Cobb was a shrewd businessman who earned much more from his off-the-field investments than he did from his regular salary. As such, he was always well dressed, making him a prime recruit for haberdashers everywhere. While the hat's rarity cannot by overstated, its state of preservation is equally noteworthy. The hat displays only minimal wear and is in Near Mint condition overall, looking much as it did when displayed on the store shelf. This is a remarkable and fascinating piece and one that we imagine is probably absent from even the most advanced collections. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $830
