1922 New York Yankees (vs. Giants) Game 2 World Series Program and Ticket Stub - Original Owner Provenance!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,541
New York Yankees program and ticket stub from Game 2 of the 1922 World Series between the Yankees and Giants, held at the Polo Grounds on October 5th. Both the program and ticket stub are accompanied by a special provenance: each belonged to our consignor's father, who actually attended the game! While the family always knew that he attended the 1922 World Series, no one was aware that he saved the program and ticket stub. They were just recently discovered by the family, along with a number of other World Series programs and tickets, and, most important, a program and ticket stub from the very first game at Yankee Stadium, on April 18, 1923 (all of the other programs and ticket stubs are offered elsewhere this auction).
The program cover features large portrait images of each club's respective manager, John McGraw and Miller Huggins, while the interior pages include photos of league and team officials, as well as portraits of twenty-two members of both the Yankees and Giants. Because both teams called the Polo Grounds home in 1922, the programs for all of the games, published by Harry M. Stevens, were identical in design. This program has been neatly scored in pencil for Game 2 of the series and records a 3-3 tie. The preprinted lineups include Ruth, B. Meusel, and Shawkey for the Yankees, and Frisch, Kelly, I. Meusel, and Stengel for the Giants. The Giants swept the Yankees in five games in the 1922 World Series. The Giants limited Ruth to just two hits in the five games, with no home runs and only one RBI. Ruth's second and final hit in the Series, a double, occurred in Game 2 and is duly noted in the score section. The sixteen-page program (9.25 x 11 inches) is missing the top staple, which has resulted in eight of the interior pages having been detached from the spine (all are present). The cover displays a number of small, light stains. In Good to Very Good condition overall. The ticket stub (4.25 x 2.25 inches), issued for a "Bleachers" seat, was discovered in the program and is in Very Good condition overall, with a few light creases. Total: 2 items (program and stub). Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,541
