1923 New York Yankees (vs. Giants) Game 3 World Series Program and Ticket Stubs - Original Owner Provenance!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,259

New York Yankees program and pair of ticket stubs from Game 3 of the 1923 World Series held at Yankee Stadium on October 12th. The historical significance of these items, of course, is that they commemorate the first World Championship in New York Yankees history, not to mention the first World Series ever played in the newly built Yankee Stadium. Equally important is their special provenance: This program, and the stubs which accompany it, belonged to our consignor's father, who actually attended the game! While the family always knew that he attended the 1923 World Series, no one was aware that he saved the program and stubs. They were just recently discovered by the family, along with a number of other World Series programs and tickets, and, most important, a program and ticket stub from the very first game at Yankee Stadium, on April 18, 1923 (all of the other programs and ticket stubs are offered elsewhere this auction).

The program cover, which incorporates the same design elements as the previous two World Series programs (the Yankees and Giants met in both the 1921 and 1922 World Series), features portrait images of the two opposing managers: Miller Huggins of the Yankees and John McGraw of the Giants. The fact that Huggins' portrait is to the left of McGraw's denotes this program as having been issued at Yankee Stadium. (Each program issued for the 1923 World Series was identical save for the placement of the portrait images on the cover: the home team's manager was always positioned to the left.) The large-format, twenty-page program features interior portrait images of members of both the Yankees and Giants, as well as various team and league officials, and has been neatly scored for Game 3 (1-0 Giants victory; Stengel home run). The program (9.25 x 11 inches) displays a light vertical fold, a tiny edge tear along the top of the front cover, a few minor creases, and a two-inch edge tear on the first page. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The pair of ticket stubs (4.25 x 2.25), issued for the "Bleachers," were discovered in the program and remain in extraordinary Near Mint condition. Total: 3 items (program and 2 stubs). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $3,259
