1922 Christy Mathewson and Hughie Jennings Advertising Scorecard
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $296
Promotional fold-over scorecard, issued by the International Correspondence School, featuring portrait images of both Christy Mathewson (as a member of the Reds) and Hughie Jennings (as a member of the Giants) on the cover. Printed on very sturdy card-like stock. The written endorsements of each player are printed next to their respective photos. The text on the back cover extolls the benefits of the school's courses. The interior scorecard section has not been filled in or scored. The original attached postcard is no longer present (detached along the right border as intended). The International Correspondence School was founded in 1891 and the text on the reverse states that the school has been "training men for better jobs for 31 years," thereby dating the piece to 1922. (Jennings was a coach with the Giants from 1921 to 1925, while Mathewson finished his career as manager of the Reds in 1918.) The scorecard (6 x 3.75 inches) is lightly toned and displays a slight tear along the spine. Without reference to the detached postcard, the scorecard remains in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $200+. SOLD FOR $296
