Original Charles Conlon and Paul Thompson "Black Sox" Photograph Collection (9)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896
Exceptional high-quality collection of eight original news photos, each taken by either Charles Conlon or Paul Thompson, depicting various Chicago White Sox players who were members of the club in 1919, including individual photos of five of the infamous "Eight Men Out": Cicotte, Williams, Risberg, Gandil, and McMullin. Also included is a photo of Cy Rigler, one of the umpires who worked the 1919 World Series. Ideally, seven of the photos originated from the Baseball Magazine archive and feature a special label on the reverse that was affixed when the archive was sold at auction by Christie's in 1999. Because none of the photos are dated, the year or range of years listed for each is based upon the uniform style shown. Charles Conlon Photos (4 total). All of the photos feature both Conlon's proprietary stamp and his customary handwritten identification of the player(s) pictured on the reverse. 1) 1918 Swede Risberg. Batting pose on the sidelines. 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Baseball Magazine archive. Vg, with a few slight creases and two small edge tears. 2) 1916 Fred McMullin. Batting pose on the sidelines. 8 x 10 inches. Baseball Magazine archive. Ex. 3) 1918 or 1920 Lefty Williams. Portrait image on field. 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Baseball Magazine archive. Editorial notations on both front and reverse, with two pinholes. Vg. 4) 1919/19120 Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Dickie Kerr, and Bill James. The four pitchers are pictured posing side-by-side on the field. 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Bill James only played with Chicago in 1919, but the uniform style shown was used in 1920. Possibly a spring-training photo (James did not make the team in 1920 and played in the minors for a number of years afterwards). Editorial notations on both front and reverse, as well as heavy editorial shading and outlining of the player images. Vg. Paul Thompson Photos (5 total). All of the photos feature Thompson's proprietary stamp and the handwritten name of the respective player on the reverse. 1) 1917 Chick Gandil 6.5 x 8.5 inches. This photo captures Gandil posing on the field at the 1917 World Series (the uniform style shown was only worn during the 1917 World Series). Baseball Magazine archive. Ex. 2) 1913 or 1916 Eddie Cicotte. 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Warming up on the sidelines. Baseball Magazine archive. Ex. 3) 1916/1917 Lefty Williams. 6.25 x 8.25 inches. Warming up on the sidelines.
