Rare 1912 Base Ball and Base Ball Players by Elwood A. Roff
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,133
Exceedingly rare example of Base Ball and Base Ball Players by Elwood A. Roff. Published by E. A. Roff, Chicago, 1912. This unique self-published hardcover book is a 253-page chronological history of the National Pastime. While the book does focus on many of the standard historically important events of the past, it is the author's penchant for the bizarre which separates this work from the many that preceded it. Ballplayer deaths, freak accidents, attempted kidnappings, and a game halted by prayer are just a few of the odd events which the author has deemed important enough to be included in this most interesting and strange reference guide. This is an extremely rare volume. While we have no information regarding the original print run, it appears to have been quite low, given the fact that it is seldom, if ever, seen today (probably fewer than five exist). This is only the third example of this book we have ever seen. The first sold at public auction for $2,174 in 2001. The other appeared as Lot 1244 in REA's May 2013 auction, where it realized a final sale price of $2,370. The green boards display light-to-moderate wear, with a few bumps and minor bubbling along the spine. There is minor separation of the front cover along the spine and both the first and last pages are toned. The remainder of the pages are clean and bright. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,133
