Christy Mathewson News Photo Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $593

Collection of three vintage news photos, each depicting Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. 1) Original 1912 news photo picturing Mathewson in a candid shot standing on the field. A number of Culver Pictures, Inc., labels and proprietary stamps, including a "Deaccessioned" stamp, appear on the reverse. Although the photo is undated, the uniform style seen here (wide pinstripe, solid black cap) was only worn by the New York Giants in 1912. The photo (6 x 8.5 inches) displays a small corner chip in the upper left corner, otherwise in Excellent condition. 2) Vintage news photo (possibly a Type II photo) picturing Mathewson as he warms up on the sideline. A "Brown Brothers" proprietary stamp, as well as a number of editorial notations, appear on the reverse. Although undated, the uniform style seen here ("N" and "Y," respectively, on the right and left breast, solid black cap) was only worn by the New York Giants in 1907. The photo (6 x 8.25 inches) displays a heavy horizontal crease that traverses its entire width that has been reinforced with clear tape on the reverse. A number of light creases and a corner chip in the lower right are also evident. Good condition overall. 3) Vintage news photo (a Type II photo) by renowned baseball photographer Louis Van Oeyen. The photo pictures Mathewson warming up on the sidelines. Van Oeyen's proprietary stamp appears on the reverse as do Mathewson's name, team ("N. Y. Giants"), and year ("1905"), each written in pencil. Despite the handwritten notation, the uniform style seen here (narrow pinstripe, black cap with "NY" on the front) was only worn by the Giants in 1911. The photo (7.75 x 9.5 inches) displays a few light surface wrinkles and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 3 photos. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $593
