Early 1900s Pittsburgh Pirates Program Collection (4)

Collection of four early Pittsburgh Pirates programs, spanning the years 1911-1923, each featuring a portrait image of team owner Barney Dreyfuss on the cover. These are very substantial programs featuring portraits of many key players on interior pages (as noted). Dating of the programs, with the exception of the 1923 example (date preprinted on cover), is based upon the rosters for each club. 1) 1911 (vs. Chicago). The interior of the sixteen-page program (7.75 x 9.75 inches) features portrait images of ten Pirates players, including Honus Wagner (same image used in his famous T206 card), Fred Clarke, and Babe Adams. The preprinted lineups include Wagner, Carey, Clarke, and McKechnie for Pittsburgh, and Tinker, Schulte, Zimmerman, and Doyle for Chicago. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 4-3 Pirates win on June 23rd. Vg, with a moderate vertical center fold, light discoloration on some of the pages, and a tear to the score sheet pages. 2) 1916 (vs. St. Louis). The interior of the sixteen-page program (7.75 x 9.75 inches) features portrait images of five Pirates players, including Honus Wagner (same image used in his famous T206 card) and manager Nixey Callahan. The preprinted lineups include Carey, Bigbee, and Hinchman for Pittsburgh, and Hornsby (his rookie season), Snyder, and Long for St. Louis. Not scored, but the date "Sept 4, 1916" is written in ink on both score sheets. Pittsburgh swept a doubleheader from St. Louis on that date. A vintage newspaper clipping covering the two games, hand-dated "Sept 5, 1916, is affixed to one of the interior pages. Vg-Ex, with a light vertical fold and minor staining and a few small tears on the back cover. 3) 1917 (vs. Brooklyn) The interior of the twelve-page program (7.75 x 9.75 inches) features portrait images of six Pirates players, including Max Carey and manager Nixey Callahan. The preprinted lineups include Wagner (final season), Carey, and King for Pittsburgh, and Stengel, Myers, and Daubert for Brooklyn. Not scored. Fr, with a moderate vertical fold, staining to both the covers and interior pages, and a number of minor tears. 4) 1923 (vs. St. Louis). The twelve-page program (8 x 10.5 inches) features a portrait image of manager Bill McKechnie on an interior page. The preprinted lineups include Maranville, Carey, Traynor, and Grimm for Pittsburgh, and Hornsby, Flack, and Meuller for St. Louis. Lightly scored in pencil, but it is not clear what the final score was. Vg, with a heavy vertical fold and a few minor edge tears. This is an exceptional group of rarely seen very early Pittsburgh Pirates programs. Total 4 programs. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,067
