Circa 1912 Chief Bender and Rube Marquard "Hand Study" Photograph Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $356

Collection of three original news photos, two of which are credited as taken by noted baseball photographer Paul Thompson, showing in great detail the hands and grips of Hall of Fame pitchers Chief Bender and Rube Marquard. 1) Circa 1912 photo of Rube Marquard's left hand. A Paul Thompson credit stamp appears on the reverse. Two vintage, handwritten editorial notations appear on the reverse as well and read, respectively, "The hands that New York expects will win the World's Series - Mathewson and Marquard," and "Marquard's slender fingered almost feminine hand which cost the Giants $11,000 and was worth it." Obviously, this photo was originally paired in print with a photo of Mathewson's hand, as noted by the reverse notation. Mathewson and Marquard appeared together in the 1911, 1912, and 1913 World Series, thereby dating the photo to one of those three years. This photo originates from the Baseball Magazine Archives, as noted by the Christie's hologram sticker in the lower right corner of the reverse (Christie's sold the entire Baseball Magazine photo archive at auction in 1996). 5 x 7 inches. Ex, with a tiny chip in the upper left corner. 2) Circa 1911 extreme close-up of Chief Bender's baseball grip. The photo has been trimmed to its current dimensions, but a portion of Paul Thompson's credit stamp remains on the reverse. A few editorial notations are also present, one of which mentions the World Series. Bender appeared in the World Series with the A's in 1910, 1911, 1913, and 1914. Like the first photo, this example also originates from the Baseball Magazine Archives, as noted by the Christie's hologram sticker in the lower right corner of the reverse. Approximately 6 x 3 inches. Ex-Mt, with note to the trimming. 3) Arms-length photo study of Chief Bender's baseball grip. The name "Bender" is written in pencil on the reverse. Roughly torn to its current dimensions of 7 x 5 inches. This photo is technically in modest condition, but the central image area is free of any defects. Total: 3 photos. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $356
