1893 Cincinnati Reds (vs. Chicago) Opening-Day Program
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,896
Extremely rare and substantial twenty-page program issued by the Cincinnati Reds for the club's 1897 opening-day game against Cap Anson's Chicago Colts. The highly decorative and colorful cover features a generic game-in-progress scene and is lettered "Cincinnati Base Ball Park/National League/Season Opens April 27th/Closes October 1st/1893." The interior pages feature twenty-four photos and brief biographies of not only some of the Reds' top players, but also prominent league officials, team owners, and sportswriters, including National League president Nicholas Young, Charles Comiskey, Bid McPhee, A. G. Spalding, Ban Johnson, A. J. Reach, Chris Von Der Ahe, and W. C. Temple (of Temple Cup fame). The preprinted lineups feature Comiskey, McPhee, Latham, Vaughn, and Mullane for Cincinnati, and Anson, Ryan, Dahlen, Lang, and Dungan for Chicago. The program has been neatly scored in pencil to record a 10-1 Reds victory. Research indicates that the only 10-1 Reds home victory over Chicago in 1893 occurred on opening day, April 27th. The program (6 x 9.25 inches) has a light vertical fold and some wear to the covers, including a small tear along the base of the back cover. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,896
