1897 Brooklyn Bridegrooms Invitation to Opening-Day Game

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,659

Formal invitation to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms opening-day game against the defending World Champion Baltimore Orioles on May 3, 1897. The invitation, printed in grand calligraphic style on the front of a fold-over sheet, reads "The Brooklyn Ball Club/presents its compliments and requests/the presence of Yourself and Ladies at/Eastern Park/on Monday afternoon, May third/to witness the opening in Brooklyn of/The National League/ Base Ball Championship Season/of 1897/Baltimore vs. Brooklyn/Play called - 4 P.M./Please present at entrance." Brooklyn endured a disappointing 3-6 road trip to begin the 1897 season, but they managed to forge a 3-3 tie in their home opener against the powerful Baltimore Orioles. This is a rare relic from Brooklyn's 1897 season and the first example we have ever seen. The invitation (5 x 8 inches) has both a horizontal and vertical mailing fold (with tiny edge tears at one end of the horizontal fold), as well as two small areas of light discoloration on the cover. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,659
