1893 Buffalo B.B.C. Large-Format Team Cabinet Photo with Jimmy Collins!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,304
Large-format cabinet photo capturing fifteen members of the 1893 Buffalo Bisons in a traditional team pose, including future Hall of Famer Jimmy Collins, who was in his first season of professional ball. This is a remarkably early and significant photographic item for Jimmy Collins, whose first year in the Major Leagues was not until 1895. Collins appeared in seventy-six games with Buffalo in 1893, finishing the season with a .286 average and 2 home runs. In addition to Collins, a number of other future major league players are pictured here as well, most notably pitcher Bill Hoffer, who would win 78 games for Brooklyn during the three-year span 1895-1897. This photo actually originates from Hoffer's estate and first appeared at public auction, along with a number of other items from Hoffer's personal collection, in 2009. All of the players are identified in print at the base of the mount. The printed caption reads "Buffalo Base Ball Team ---1893." The photographer's ("Shenk") and printer's ("Johnson") credits appear, respectively, in the lower left and right corners of the mount. Extremely rare. This is the only example of this cabinet photo we have ever seen. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches) has somewhat light contrast but is otherwise in Near Mint condition. The mount (13 x 11) has light toning, a tiny tear along the left border, and a few stray pencil notations on the reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
