Extraordinary 1890s New York Sporting Times Scorecard with Portraits of Kelly, Anson, etc.
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,555
Exceedingly rare four-page scorecard (4 7/8" x 7 1/8") issued as an advertising premium by the New York Sporting Times ("The Leading Base Ball Paper of the Country"). The striking multicolor cover features portraits of John Ward, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Buck Ewing, Jack Glasscock, Mike "King" Kelly, and Cap Anson. On the reverse is a full-color advertisement for Spalding's Official League Balls. The quality, design, and prominence of the ballplayers pictured make this scorecard one of the finest of all nineteenth-century programs. It is also extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge this is the only known example. The interior lineups record an amateur game and have been filled out and scored in pencil. The scorecard has had some expertly executed professional restoration, including a virtually undetectable repair to a separation along the spine. Very Good to Excellent in appearance. It is rare to have the portrait of even one Hall of Famer grace the cover of a nineteenth-century program, let alone the portraits of seven major stars including six Hall of Famers! This is an extraordinary program and nineteenth-century display piece. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,555
