1938 Jack Dempsey Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $830

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue fountain pen (grading "9") on a side panel by former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey. The date of the signing, "April 24 1938," is noted in vintage green ink on the sweet spot. This is one of the few single-signed balls in the B. C. Clark collection and the only one to feature an athlete other than a baseball player. Although Dempsey was long retired at this point, he was still a legendary sports figure, especially in New York, where his famous restaurant was a popular destination for both athletes and celebrities. The Yankees defeated the Washington Senators 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on April 24, 1938, and it was likely that B. C. Clark ran into Dempsey at the game and took advantage of the meeting by having this ball signed. The ball displays light-to-moderate soiling that is consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $830
