1955 Ty Cobb Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $9,480

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue fountain pen (grading "9") on a side panel by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. The date of the signing, "Aug 2. 1955," is noted in vintage blue ink on the ball label. This is one of the few single-signed balls in the B. C. Clark collection and he certainly picked a good player to make an exception to his rule. Even though he lived longer, Cobb singles are actually rarer than those of Babe Ruth (who was a particularly accommodating signer) and have always been extremely desirable among collectors. Few examples have such outstanding provenance. The ball displays light-to-moderate soiling (most of the manufacturer's stampings are no longer visible) that is consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $9,480
