1937 Boston Red Sox Signed Ball with Foxx and Grove

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,422

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue fountain pen by the following four members of the 1937 Boston Red Sox: Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Rick Ferrell, and Ben Chapman. The ball has also been signed by Washington Senators pitcher Monte Weaver. Signatures range from "6" to "9," averaging "8." Ideally, the signatures of Foxx and Grove appear together on a side panel for optimal display. The reason Weaver's signature is on the ball is that it was signed at a game in Washington between the Red Sox and Senators. That fact is evident by the vintage blue-ink notation printed on the sweet spot that reads "May 16, 1937." The Red Sox defeated the Senators 6-5 at Griffith Stadium on that date, with Foxx delivering three hits in the win. Monte Weaver suffered the loss for Washington. The ball displays light soiling, as well as a small area of discoloration on a side panel (no signatures on that panel), features consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,422
