1937 Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox Team-Signed Ball with Foxx, Grove, Simmons, and Berg
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $948
"Official League" ball (manufacturer's stampings no longer legible) signed in blue ink by the following eighteen members of either the 1937 Washington Senators or Boston Red Sox: Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove (sweet spot), Al Simmons, Joe Cronin, Bucky Harris (Washington Mgr.), Moe Berg, Joe Cascarella, Ben Chapman, Syd Cohen, Wally Millies, Johnny Mihalic, Pete Appleton, Buddy Lewis, Johnny Stone, Buddy Myer, Joe Kuhel, Ossie Bleuge, and Ed Linke. Signatures range from "7" to "9," averaging "8." The date, "May 16, 1937," is written on the ball label in blue ink. Boston defeated Washington 6-5 at Griffith Stadium on May 16, 1937, which explains why the ball has been signed by members of both clubs. What is amazing is that even though the ball displays only four Red Sox signatures (Foxx, Grove, Cronin, and Berg) they are probably the four most desirable signatures from that club by today's hobby standards. The ball displays moderate-to-heavy soiling that is consistent with its having been a practice ball. In Very Good condition overall. From the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $948
