1949 World Series Multisigned Ball with Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,444
Official National League (Frick) ball signed in blue fountain pen by the following seven participants and attendees at the 1949 World Series: Ty Cobb ("9"), Phil Rizzuto, "Happy" Chandler (baseball commissioner), Yogi Berra, Will Harridge (American League president), Allie Reynolds, and Vic Raschi. Signatures range from "7" to "9," averaging "8." The ball's World Series provenance is based upon the vintage blue-ink notation written on the sweet spot that reads "Oct 5, 1949/World Series/Yankees vs. Brooklyn." As noted in our introduction to the B. C. Clark Collection, Clark became friends with Rizzuto in 1937, when Rizzuto was playing for Bassett in the Bi-State League. That friendship later resulted in Clark's easy access to World Series games involving the Yankees. Once inside the stadium, Clark was quite proficient in procuring the signatures of the top players and attendees at such events, as evidenced by this fine example. The ball displays light-to-moderate soiling (only a portion of the manufacturer's labels are visible), as well as a few abrasions, features consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,444
