Official National League (Frick) ball signed in blue fountain pen by Walter Johnson and Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis at the 1939 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. Landis' signature adorns the sweet spot (grading "7"), while Johnson's appears on the north panel (lightly traced over). The signature of "June O'Dea Gomez," wife of Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez (who was a member of the 1939 American League All-Star team), appears on the south panel. Its All-Star-Game provenance is predicated upon the vintage blue-ink notation printed on the east panel that reads "All Star Game/Amer-vs-Nat/Yankee Stadium/July 11. 1939." Johnson was employed as a radio announcer for the Senators in 1939, so his attendance at the game might have been related to his on-air duties. This is a unique signature pairing and the only Johnson/Landis signed ball we have ever seen. The ball displays light soiling and a few small areas of minor abrasion that are consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,067
