1931 Walter Johnson and Jimmie Foxx Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,444
Blue-and-red stitched Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue fountain pen by Walter Johnson and Jimmie Foxx. Johnson's signature (grading "8") graces the sweet spot, while Foxx's signature (grading "8") is located on the east panel. The vintage blue-ink notation, "Aug 1. 1931" is printed on the ball label. The Washington Senators, managed by Walter Johnson, defeated Jimmie Foxx's Philadelphia A's 2-1 on August 1, 1931 at Griffith Stadium. Obviously, B. C. Clark made the trip to the game that day and was lucky enough to obtain the signatures of both Hall of Famers on this ball. This is both a unique and highly desirable signature pairing, and the first example we can ever recall seeing. The ball displays moderate soiling, as well as a few scattered areas of toning, features consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,444
