1933 New York Yankees and Washington Senators Signed Ball with Lou Gehrig
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,925
Blue-and-red stitched ball (most likely an official American League ball) signed in blue fountain pen by the following six members of either the 1933 New York Yankees or Washington Senators: Lou Gehrig (grading "9"), Joe Sewell, Luke Sewell, Russ Van Atta, Eddie Farrell, and Al Schacht (known as the "Clown prince of Baseball"). Signatures range from "7" to "9," averaging "8/9." The date, "July 30, 1933," is printed in vintage blue ink on a side panel. The Yankees and Senators met on that date at Griffith Stadium in Washington, where the Yankees won by a score of 7-2. Gehrig went 3-5 in the game, while Van Atta went the distance on the mound in picking up his ninth win of the season. The ball displays moderate-to-heavy soiling (none of the manufacturer's labels are visible) that is consistent with its having been a game-used ball (as are nearly all of the balls in the B. C. Clark Collection; see introduction for full details and provenance). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $5,925
