1974 Frank Robinson Signed Puerto Rican League Contract

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $948

Four-page fold-over contract, dated October 23, 1974, between Frank Robinson and the Santurce Baseball Club of the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League, signed in blue ink by "Frank Robinson" (grading "10"), Hiram Cuevas, president of the Santurce club, and the league president. The agreement calls for Robinson to receive $800 per month as player/manager for the 1974-1975 winter season. Just twenty days before signing this contract Robinson was hired as player/manager of the Cleveland Indians, making him the first African American manager in major league history. Robinson had been managing Santurce for the past five seasons and he often credited his managerial tenure with the club as having helped him earn the Cleveland job that year. Robinson retired in 1976 with 528 home runs, 1,812 RBI, and a .294 average. He is also the only player to win the MVP Award in both leagues. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982, his first year of eligibility. Baseball contracts of Hall of Fame players, especially those dating from their respective playing careers, are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is only the second Frank Robinson contract of any kind we have ever offered (ironically, the other example, a 1964 Reds contract, appears in this auction as well) and we cannot recall having seen any others ever. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two notebook holes at the top border. The date "10-28-74" is written in blue ink on the first page in the upper left corner. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $948
