1948 Bowman Football Complete Set (108)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,200

Offered is a complete set of 108 cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first football-card set issued by Bowman Gum. This significant set is highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers. Condition is 15% Vg-Ex, 41% Vg, and 44% lesser (including approximately 13% which display irregular borders, suggesting they were long-ago hand-cut from sheets, which is especially common to find among early Bowman issues). Keys: #1 Tereshinski RC (Vg), 3 Lujack RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg), 7 Van Buren RC (Gd), 12 Conerly RC (Vg-Ex), 17 Trippi RC (Vg), 22 Baugh RC (Vg), 26 Waterfield RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 36 Turner RC (Fr), 61 Wojciechowicz RC (Vg), 63 Pihos RC (Pr), 80 Dudley RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Fr), 99 Gilmer RC (Vg), 107 Luckman RC (Vg), and 108 Ray RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Fr). Its football cards never caught on quite like its baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set will always be the first football venture, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. Total: 108 cards. SOLD FOR $1,200
