1949 Varsity Bubble Gum College Pennant (1950 Topps "Felt Backs") Football Advertising Sheet

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,440

Presented is an outstanding advertising sheet heralding a promotional giveaway associated with the Varsity Bubble Gum College Pennant series. This piece, which is the first of its kind that we have ever seen, is particularly significant because, in addition to being an advertising item relating to one of Topps' earliest issues, it provides, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, evidence that the set known within the hobby as 1950 Topps "Felt Backs" was actually produced and issued in 1949 (as many have suspected for some time). Varsity Bubble Gum, which was a division of Topps Chewing Gum at the time, issued one felt college pennant inside each one-cent package of gum. Young collectors who were able to amass twenty-five different pennants had the opportunity to trade them in for an official-size college football. According to this sheet, the deadline for submission was Christmas, 1949, suggesting that the product had been available for a period of time beforehand. The advertising sheet, which measures 8.5 x 11 inches, is printed in black and red on thin, tan paper. Illustrations of the prize football, Varsity Bubble Gum pack, and sample pennants, as well as dozens of children clamoring around the offer, fill the sheet, accompanied by pertinent text, including offer instructions and company mailing address. The sheet is bright and clean, presenting as Excellent or better, with small imperfections, including a tear along the left edge, a small crease in the upper right corner, and adhesive residue on the reverse (likely from display at some point in time), visible under close inspection. This is an incredible surviving relic from this early football issue, which would be a prize in any football card or Topps advertising collection. SOLD FOR $1,440
