1949 Leaf Football Complete Set (49)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200

Complete 49-card set of 1949 Leaf Football cards plus one wrong back of Hall of Famer Bulldog Turner. Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf Football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. Also of note is the fact that, just as there is a rare and a common 49-card series of 1948-1949 Leaf Baseball, 1949 Leaf Football are considerably rarer than 1948 Leaf Football. Interestingly, the significant difference in rarity between the 1948 and 1949 Leaf Football cards has not yet been recognized by price guides (an error that will someday no doubt be corrected), but it is clearly the case, and by a wide margin. This is well known to many serious collectors. This is an attractive and rarely seen mid-grade set of this difficult 1940s football-card issue. We have selected three cards to graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Hendren (Vg-Ex), 15 Luckman (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), 16 Trippi (Vg-Ex), 19 Christman (Vg), 22 Dudley (Vg), 26 Baugh (EX 60), 28 Pihos (Vg+), 40 Connor (Vg-Ex), 41 McAfee (Gd/Vg), 43 Tripuca (Vg-Ex+), 49 Conerly (trimmed, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 51 Kavanaugh (Ex), 56 Lujack (Fr), 62 Gilmer (Vg-Ex), 67 Layne (EX 60), 79 Van Buren (Vg), 89 Waterfield (EX/NM 80), 95 Washington (Vg), 101 Harder (Ex, misspelled Harber), 134 Bednarik (Gd), 150 Turner (trimmed, otherwise Ex), and 150 Turner (wrong back, #23 LaForce on reverse, Gd). The balance of the cards range in grade from Vg to Ex and include a few with slight trimming or irregular cuts. Total: 50 cards (complete set of 49 plus one wrong back). SOLD FOR $1,200
