1894 N302 Mayo's Cut Plug Football PSA-Graded Collection (16)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,300
Collection of fifteen different (plus one duplicate) of the thirty-five cards in the Mayo's Cut Plug Football set, one of rarest and most important of all football-card sets and the only nineteenth-century card issue devoted exclusively to football. Each card is graded and encapsulated by PSA. N302 Mayo's Cut Plug is considered by many to be one of rarest of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features Ivy League football players of the day. Similar in design to their N300 Mayo's Cut Plug baseball counterparts, the N302 football cards are very susceptible to edge wear due to their easily-chipped black borders. This collection consists of the following: Acton/Harvard, Armstrong/Yale, Barnett/Princeton, Brown/Princeton, two Burt/Princeton, Butterworth/Yale, Crowdis/Princeton, Emmons/Harvard, Gonterman/Harvard, Holly/Princeton, Lea/Princeton, Mackie/Harvard, Manahan/Harvard, Murphy/Yale, and Riggs/Princeton. Every card in the offered collection is encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA due to a hole in top center of the card, consistent with having been nailed to a display at some point in time (one card, Burt, does not have a hole, while three cards have a hole at the bottom as well). Several of the cards have additional flaws that would normally cause them to grade modestly anyway. While the condition of the cards in this lot is far from Mint, this collection does represent a very interesting, relatively affordable (compared to higher grade examples), and rare opportunity to acquire just under one-half of a complete set of this extremely desirable nineteenth-century football issue. Total: 16 cards. SOLD FOR $3,300
