Circa 1905 Philadelphia Athletics Team Real-Photo Postcard with Waddell and Bender
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,800
Extremely unusual and rare real-photo postcard, dating from the early 1900s, capturing eleven members of the Philadelphia Athletics. The players are pictured in uniform, posing on the field, with the outfield fence and a house visible in the background. Although the players are not identified, Hall of Fame pitchers Rube Waddell (standing, center) and Chief Bender (standing, second from the left) are clearly recognizable. Waddell and Bender only played together with the A's from 1903 to 1907, thereby narrowing the date of the photo to that five-year span. This is an outstanding real-photo postcard, and the first example of this card that we have ever seen. It is also very distinctive. Given the setting, the photo appears to have been taken either in spring training or at an exhibition game at a local park. The black fountain-pen notation "Do you recognize any faces! JLA," appears on the front in the lower right corner. The postcard (5.25 x 3.5 inches) has been addressed on the reverse, but was never mailed. A small diagonal crease affects both the upper and lower right corners. Encapsulated and graded POOR 10 by SGC; however, that technically accurate grade is predicated largely upon the written notations on each side, which, in our opinion, do not detract in the least from its overall Excellent appearance.
