Mickey Mantle Limited-Edition LeRoy Neiman Serigraph
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $4,500
Titled Mickey Mantle, issued in 1999, serigraph numbered "32/350," and flawlessly signed in pencil along the lower margin by LeRoy Neiman (grading "10"). Edition limited to 428 impressions (350 numbered impressions, 70 artist's proofs, and 8 printer's proofs). This is one of Neiman's most popular and celebrated works, and the premier artist serigraph tribute to Mickey Mantle. Neiman was good friends with Mantle and according to Neiman's website, this serigraph "carries additional sentimental memories for LeRoy as Mickey always had a particular liking for the original painting on which the print is based." In 1997, Robert Edward Auctions had the privilege of offering at auction the original painting used to create this serigraph, which at that time sold for $108,000. As collectors are well aware, the Mantle Neiman serigraph is one of the most highly regarded "blue chips" among Neiman's work, and examples very rarely come to the marketplace. The only other examples REA has ever offered sold, respectively, for $4,600 in 2004 (Lot 567) and $4,700 in 2009 (Lot 1319). This is an extremely desirable and iconic Neiman work. The serigraph, which measures 33 x 33 inches (image area), displays a few minor creases along the white border areas (all can be easily matted out) and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. SOLD FOR $4,500
