1996 Original 500 Home Run Club Painting by Doo S. Oh - Signed by all Eleven Players

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $6,600

Extraordinary original oil-on-canvas painting, created in 1996 by noted sports artist Doo S. Oh, picturing the then eleven living members of the 500 Home Run Club. This is an iconic artwork. It is the very painting used to produce the extremely well known limited-edition lithographs issued to fans at the 1996 500 Home Run Club show held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Ideally, the painting has been personally (and flawlessly) signed in blue Sharpie by all ten players pictured: Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Ernie Banks, Willie McCovey, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Eddie Murray, Frank Robinson, and Harmon Killebrew. Also signed by the artist in the center. The 1996 500 Home Run Club show was the first one that did not include Mickey Mantle, who died the previous year. Because all of the earlier 500 Home Run Club prints featured Mantle, the promoters of the event, National Pastime, commissioned Doo S. Oh to create a new signature artwork that would be used to produce the high-quality limited-edition lithographs issued at the show. Like artist Ron Lewis before him, Oh used Yankee Stadium as a backdrop for the piece. All of the players are pictured in a bust-length pose, with the exception of Hank Aaron, who is seen standing in the center. While many of Oh's sports lithographs are familiar to collectors, including the 3,000 K Club and World Series MVPs, his original artwork is seldom seen at auction. This is not only one of his earlier works, but one of his most iconic and most impressive as well, especially given the subject matter. The fact that it has also been signed by all of the players pictured only adds to its significance. The painting, which measures 49 x 47 inches, is in Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 53 x 51 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. LOA from James Spence/JSA. SOLD FOR $6,600
