1981 New York Yankees Yearbook Original Artwork (Interior Pages) by John Romita
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
This is certainly one of the most unusual original artworks we have ever offered, and one which is particularly interesting and with great display value: Original four-page artwork by noted comic-book artist John Romita, used as a special commemorative insert in the 1981 New York Yankees yearbook. 1981 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. To celebrate the historic event, the Yankees commissioned Romita to draw a four-page "comic-book," titled The Greatest Game Ever Pitched, for use as the centerfold in the team's 1981 yearbook. This is the actual original artwork to this centerfold! The comic captured the events of that memorable day in words and pictures, which, of course, culminates in Yogi Berra jumping into Larsen's arms following the last out of the game. John Romita was one of the top comic-book artists of his era and is best known by fans today for his work on Marvel Comic's The Amazing Spider Man during the late 1960s. He later become the company's art director and was instrumental in the design of a number of other iconic Marvel characters, including Wolverine, Punisher, and Luke Cage. The mixed-media artwork, which is featured on four individual panels (each 7.25 x 10 inches), is in Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 34 x 13.5 inches. Accompanied by a copy of the 1981 New York Yankees yearbook (Ex). SOLD FOR $840
