Circa 1960 Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra Yoo-Hoo Advertising Display and Can - Signed by Berra

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960

Rare early 1960s point-of-sale advertising display sign for Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Flavored Beverage, signed by Yogi Berra in black Sharpie (grading "10") along the top border. The design features portrait images of both Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle in promotion of the famed "Drink of Champions," the company's famous slogan, "Me For Yoo-Hoo," and an illustration of a can of Yoo-Hoo that pictures portraits of Yankee stars on bottle caps, including Berra and Mantle. Ideally, the sign is accompanied by an original example of the same Yoo-Hoo can as portrayed on the advertising display. While many people recall Berra's long-standing promotion of the chocolate beverage, the drink was actually invented many years earlier, in the 1920s. It wasn't until Berra became friends with the owner of the company in the 1950s, however, that Yoo-Hoo became a household word. Berra not only recruited a number of investors to help finance a major production facility, but also enlisted the aid of many of his teammates, most important Mickey Mantle, to help promote the beverage. Their efforts were very successful. In a short time Yoo-Hoo became one of the most popular refreshments in America and the chosen drink of every diehard Yankees fan. This is a very substantial and rare display piece and seldom-seen can from one of the most famous product endorsements of the era. The blank-back sign (9 x 12 inches) displays light-to-moderate surface wear, including a few extremely tiny, light stains in the upper left corner (barely noticeable), a few minor abrasions, and a tiny indentation above Berra's portrait. There are two strips of adhesive residue on the reverse (on the top and bottom borders, respectively) from the sign having once been mounted. In Excellent condition overall. The can (5.5 inches high; 2.5 inches in diameter), which is empty (never actually used, taken directly from the production line) and without its lid, displays only a few tiny abrasions and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 2 items (sign and can).
