Large-Format 1961 Yankees News-Photo Collection with Maris 61st Home Run Photo (by Pulitzer Prize winning Daily News photographer Frank Hurley)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $300

Collection of five vintage large-format New York Yankees news photos, each taken by Pulitzer Prize winning Daily News photographer Frank Hurley, dating from the historic 1961 season. The highlight of the group is Hurley's classic image of Maris hitting his record-setting 61st home run on the final day of the 1961 season. Maris is pictured in full swing, immediately after making contact with the ball, which can be seen in the top right-hand corner of the photo as it makes its ascent into history. Also included in the group are two photos taken during the 1961 World Series (one of Clete Boyer making a diving stop and the other of Reds catcher Johnny Edwards sliding into the Reds' dugout in pursuit of a Mantle foul ball), and a photo of Tex Clevenger in the Yankee bullpen attempting to catch a Yogi Berra home run. The final photo is actually a montage of six smaller photos showing the sequence of events when two fans ran on the field and attacked Indians outfielder Jimmy Piersall during a game at Yankee Stadium on September 10, 1961. All of the large-format photos in the collection measure approximately 13.25 x 10.25 inches, while the six photos that make up the montage each measure 7 x 5 inches. All of the photos have been mounted onto manilla boards (15.5 x 16.5 inches) that, ideally, feature the actual newspaper clippings (or photo copies of the original clippings) that feature the respective photo. Our consignor obtained these five photos, along with eleven others (which he is keeping at this time), from the family of a gentleman who worked as a production assistant at the Daily News for many years. The photos are accompanied by a one-page signed letter of opinion (which can be viewed on our website) from highly respected photography expert David Cycleback in which he concludes the following: "With the caveat that I was limited in dating to the exact year due to not being able to examine the back of the photographic prints themselves and because there are not definitive date or provenance stamps, it is my opinion that the photos, including the Maris home run photo, are consistent with being vintage originals (PSA/DNA uses the term Type I for vintage originals)." Large-format news photos such as these are rare, especially those capturing historic moments such as Maris' 61st home run. The fact that each was taken by noted sports photographer Frank Hurley (Hurley was also the photographer who took the photo of Willie Mays' historic over-the-shoulder catch in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series) only adds to their great significance. Aside from having been mounted, each photo remains in Near Mint condition. This is an exceptional and unique 1961 New York Yankees photographic archive, of all the greater special note in that each of the large-format photos are perfect for framing. Total: 5 photos.
