1954 New York Giants World Series Ticket (Proof) - Game 1 - Mays' Historic Catch!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $360

Rare full ticket to Game 1 of the 1954 World Series between the New York Giants and Cleveland Indians, held at the Polo Grounds in New York. Game 1 of the 1954 World Series will always be remembered for Willie Mays' spectacular catch off the bat of Vic Wertz in the top of the eighth inning, That catch preserved a 2-2 tie at the time and the Giants then won the game in the tenth inning on a dramatic three-run home run by Dusty Rhodes. The victory propelled the Giants to an unlikely sweep of the heavily favored Indians, who had won a then-record 111 games during the regular season. The offered ticket is a proof as it displays no printed row or seat number and also has a single cancellation hole punched at either end. Needless to say, very few full tickets to the first game of the 1954 World Series exist because the game was attended by 52,751 fans, which represents a record number for a World Series game at the Polo Grounds. We can only recall having seen two other examples over the years, one of which was also a proof, making the offered ticket an exceedingly rare souvenir from one of the most memorable World Series games ever played. The ticket (7.25 x 2.25 inches) displays the two aforementioned cancellation holes (one at each end) and is otherwise in Near Mint condition.
