1931 New York Giants Silver Pass
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600
New York Giants sterling-silver season pass, featuring a baseball cartoon in high relief, issued for the 1931 season. From 1919 through 1931 the New York Giants issued beautifully designed sterling-silver passes to season-ticket holders and select dignitaries. Those passes, uniquely designed in a variety of shapes and baseball motifs (usually in relief), entitled the bearer to entry to every Giants game at the Polo Grounds during the respective season. All are rare, especially those from the earlier years of the series. The front of the offered pass (1.75 x 1.5 inches) bears the team name ("Giants"), the year ("1931"), and the name of the team owner ("Chas. A. Stoneham Pres."). The reverse features the engraved name of the original owner and the official pass number ("A. C. Brundage 405"), as well as the name of the manufacturer ("Lambert Bros., N.Y."). It is interesting to note that the designs of the 1930 and 1931 passes are related, as each pictures one panel of a very famous two-panel baseball cartoon. The 1930 pass displays the first panel of the cartoon, which pictures three hopeful hometown fans caught up in the anticipation of the final moments of the game. The situation is conveyed by their expressions and the caption "2 out, Bases Full, 3 balls, 2 strikes." The 1931 pass features the second panel of the cartoon. Again, the same three fans are pictured, but only this time they are slumped in their seats, deflated, with the caption "Fanned Out" displayed above. The pass displays natural tarnishing consistent with its age (it could easily be polished to perfection if desired), and moderate surface wear. In Excellent condition overall. SOLD FOR $600
