1917-1922 Babe Ruth Vintage News Photo Collection (4)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,600

Collection of four vintage Babe Ruth news photos dating from approximately 1917 to 1922. These photos were all produced by Bain News Service, which was founded by noted baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. They were later purchased by Culver Pictures Inc., of New York, and, as noted by the stamping on the reverse of each, all were later deaccessioned from the Culver Archives in 1992. 1) Photo of Ruth as a member of the Boston Red Sox circa 1917. Ruth is pictured sitting on the steps of the dugout with fellow teammates Ernie Shore, Rube Foster, and Del Gainer. As is normally seen on Bain News Service photographs, the name of each player as well as an identification number appear along the top border in white (they were etched into the original negative and appear on the photo in white). The photo (5.75 x 4 inches) has bee affixed to a cardboard mount (8 x 5.5 inches) that bears the pencil notation "Babe Ruth when he was a pitcher for the Red Sox" and "Ca 1920" (obviously in error, as Ruth was only with the Red Sox from 1914 to 1919). All four of these players were members of the Red Sox from 1914 to 1919. Culver stampings on the reverse of the mount. Vg-Ex, with minor chipping along the corners and blue-ink enhancement to the player names and identification number on the front. 2) 1922 photo (5 x 7 inches) of Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees. Ruth is pictured in mid swing at the plate. The stamped caption on the reverse reads "Babe Ruth Knocking a homer at New Orleans Mch 21, 1922." Culver stamps and labels on the reverse. Vg, with corner chips, light creases, and minor edge tears. 3) Circa 1922 photo (5 x 7 inches) of Ruth as a member of the Yankees standing in front of the backstop at the Polo Grounds. A Bain News Service stamp appears on the front of the photo (across Ruth's image) and on the reverse. Vg, with two tiny corner chips and a few light creases. 4) Circa 1921 photo (5 x 7 inches) of Ruth posing on the field with a young girl at the Polo Grounds. A stamp on the reverse reads "Babe Ruth of the Yankees Mch 2, 1927." However, that date appears to be in error: Ruth is holding a pinstriped cap, which the Yankees did not use after 1921 and he is pictured at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees only played their home games at the Polo Grounds from 1913 to 1922. Ruth's name and an identification number appear in white along the top border (Ruth's name is enhanced in blue ink). Culver stamps and labels on the reverse. Vg, with a large tear along the right border. Total: 4 photos. SOLD FOR $3,600
