1928 New York Yankees World Series Program Signed by Connie Mack
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720
Substantial twenty-page large-format program (from the glory days of Ruth and Gehrig!) issued for a 1928 World Series game between the Yankees and Cardinals at Yankee Stadium. Signed by legendary Philadelphia A's manager Connie Mack in black fountain pen (grading "7/8") on the cover. The 1928 World Series program at New York is especially noted for its extremely decorative cover, which features portraits of opposing managers Miller Huggins and Bill McKechnie. Few programs are more highly suited for display. The interior pages include photos of league and team officials, as well as portraits of twenty-five members of both the Yankees and Cardinals. Published by Harry M. Stevens. The preprinted lineups include Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Combs, and Meusel for New York, and Frisch, Bottomley, Hafey, Maranville, and Alexander for St. Louis. The Yankees, who easily swept the Pirates in the 1927 fall classic, continued their postseason dominance in 1928 by defeating the Cardinals in four straight, thus becoming the first team in history to win eight consecutive World Series games. (The Yankees would improve on that streak by sweeping the Cubs in the 1932 World Series.) The program is not scored for any particular game, but both scoring sheets display numerous pencil notations. The program (9.25 x 11 inches) displays general wear, including minor edge tears to the covers, a few light creases, and tiny stains. In Good to Very Good condition overall.
