Circa 1910 Cy Young Tobacco Tin

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,000

Extremely rare Cy Young Tobacco tin dating from circa 1910. The Cy Young Tobacco tin is one of only two early tobacco tins which feature the likeness of a specific baseball player. The other is the legendary Ty Cobb Tobacco tin. The cylindrical tin features a portrait of Cy Young on each side, surrounded by small baseball illustrations on the side of each portrait, as well as the words "By Permission of Cy Young," with "Cy Young" appearing as a facsimile signature. A small box on the side indicates that the cigars were "manufactured to retail at not more than 5 cents." It is likely that this tin actually sat on the counter of the cigar store dispensing single cigars or helping to sell entire tins of fifty cigars at a time. The Cy Young Tobacco tin is one of the most outstanding and attractive baseball advertising display pieces of the era, and one of the few to feature the likeness of the great Cy Young. Few advertising items are as well known outside of baseball collecting circles. Like the Ty Cobb Tobacco tin, the Cy Young tin is valued not just in the baseball world, but is also highly prized in the (non-baseball) advertising and tobacco-tin field. This is just the third Cy Young Tobacco tin we have offered in the past ten years. The first, which was an outstanding high-grade example, appeared as Lot 69 in our April 2005 auction (realizing $4,930), while the second was featured as Lot 1020 in our May 2012 sale (realizing $2,963). The tin displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including oxidation and a number of scratches and minor depressions along the surface. In Good condition overall. Despite the condition anomalies, both images of Young are largely unaffected by any of the flaws and the tin remains an attractive display piece. Dimensions: 5 inches in both height and diameter.
