1911-1916 Frank Baker Full-Size Decal Bat
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440
This H&B Louisville Slugger "40 F. B." full-size decal bat, which dates from the 1911-1916 manufacturing period, features a colorful portrait of Hall of Fame third baseman Frank Baker on the barrel. The decal pictures Baker as a member of the Philadelphia A's and boasts that he "Uses The Louisville Slugger Bat Exclusively." Baker's facsimile signature appears below his image, as does the lettering "World's Championship Model." One of the most interesting aspects of this decal is that H&B refers to Baker above his image as "Good-Night Baker" instead of "Home Run Baker." Baker earned his famous nickname by virtue of his home-run heroics in the 1911 World Series, indicating that this bat may have been issued right after the A's 1910 World Series victory, before Baker exchanged his "Good-Night" sobriquet for "Home Run." The decal on the offered bat is in outstanding condition overall and far superior to those normally seen. Incredibly, nearly 99% of the the decal label is complete and intact, with no restoration whatsoever, which these days has become somewhat of a rarity for portrait decal bats. Overall, the decal grades "9" (on a scale of "1" to "10"), displaying just modest surface wear. (Grading of, course, is very subjective in general, but is especially so for decals, and bidders should use their own judgment after viewing the image on line.) The 34-inch bat, which appears to have experienced use at some point, displays moderate wear, including a number of small indentations, deadwood, and a few small chips. An "X" (meaning unknown) is carved on both the end of the knob and barrel. An exceptional example, far superior in display value to what is normally seen for these condition-sensitive large decal bats. SOLD FOR $1,440
